Electronic braking control. Lightning fast!

Reacting with lightning speed is essential in hazardous situations – every second counts! Electronic braking systems (EBS) react faster than the driver is able to.

Without delay ...

Electronic Braking Systems (EBS) react fast in critical driving situations. The brakes are triggered directly by the EBS at lightning speed. They are controlled by a “mastermind” system ECU. The advantages of electronic braking systems, also known as electronic braking control, over conventional pneumatic control are shorter activation times and shorter braking distances. Every second and every centimeter counts. That is why we are working to consistently develop active and passive driver assistance systems for commercial vehicles. For better traffic safety.

EBS – one system, multiple components

The Electronic Braking System (EBS) actually consists of multiple components that all work together to achieve a single task: immediately slowing the vehicle in case of danger, without losing control. A complete EBS includes an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Automatic Traction Control (ATC) and Electronic Stability Program (ESP). Adaptive speed control systems, called Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) also help ensure safe, smart braking.

The main components of the EBS system are:

  • Electronic Control Unit (ECU)
  • Foot Brake Module (FBM)
  • 1 and 2 Channel Electro-Pneumatic Modules (EPMs)
  • Trailer Control Module (TCM)
  • Wheel Speed Sensors (WSS)
  • Yaw Rate Sensor (YRS) and Steering Angle Sensor (SAS)
  • Pressure Control Valves (PCV)

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) – for no locking!

If a vehicle’s wheels lock up during a strong braking maneuver, it can become very difficult to control. Trucks can start to lurch from side to side. To prevent accidents, Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS) are required by law in trucks, buses and trailers. They prevent the wheels from locking up while braking. As a pioneer in developing ABS systems for commercial vehicles, Knorr-Bremse offers ABS and ATC systems for all types of vehicles with air brakes.

Automatic Traction Control (ATC) – don’t spin out!

Automatic Traction Control (ATC), also called Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) ensures the wheels on the drive axle do not start to spin when the vehicle starts and accelerates. Both ABS and ATC systems act in the longitudinal vehicle direction and are designed to help prevent both over and understeering. ATC systems from Knorr-Bremse ensure optimal traction – no matter the road conditions!

Electronic Stability Program (ESP) – stay on track!

Adding an electronic stability program (ESP) to an electronic braking system provides automatic stabilization of the vehicle in critical driving situations. This significantly reduces the danger of tipping over and wheel slip. The ESP automatically corrects the speed and direction of travel for the vehicle and any towed load in critical situations. If the vehicle deviates from its programmed, safe “ideal line,” the total EBS activates with lightning speed, applying selective braking pulses on individual wheel brakes and by reducing the engine torque. Automatic braking, with no slipping!

Maintenance and diagnostics – fast and precise

EBS system diagnostics from Knorr-Bremse TruckServices ensures fast and precise error correction. All components are available individually. This makes maintenance and service especially economical. Replacement parts are available fast, and work perfectly in the braking system. Each part fits precisely thanks to OE quality. Knorr-Bremse also offers some electronic braking systems as EconX products for economical maintenance – an eco-friendly and efficient alternative for older commercial vehicles.
